International Fine Art Photography Award & A Few Honorable Mentions

It’s been a busy few months but I wanted to make a note of mentioning an exciting award that I was honored with back during the month of October. After entering one of the photographs from my Egret Rookery project into the International Fine Art Photography Award competition, it was selected as one of the final 69 images to be featured in the 2012 Nofound Photo Fair.

Held in Paris, France, the Nofound Photo Fair housed my piece, entitled Building a Nest, as it was exhibited from November 16th through the 19th. This particular fair is considered to be one of the biggest contemporary photography fairs in Paris, bringing together photography lovers from all over to enjoy a selection of unique and original projects. Following the show the print was accepted into the permanent collection at aFlicek_MIchael_Building a nest museum in Paris, the Bibliotheque Nationale de France. Being chosen to participate in such an event was truly a highlight in my career.

Photographed in a central New Orleans park close to the famous Bourbon Street, Building a Nest took form when I noticed a colony of egrets nesting in a tree along the waterway. Each time one bird would spread its wings and leave the nesting tree, another would be making its way back, some even returning with a few twigs for the nest. Lost in the hypnosis of the scene, I found myself taking photographs of these fascinating birds for hours, and it seems as though one managed to captivate the attention of the competition’s judges.

In addition to being honored with this esteemed award, I’m proud to say that my work has recently earned recognition in a few other important showcases, including exhibitions at the Open Shutter Gallery in Durango, the Colorado Photographic Arts Center in Denver and the Governor’s Capitol Art Exhibition in Wyoming. In each of these three shows my selections were singled out from among selected works for additional awards. As always, it is simply incredible to even be included in these shows and it is my hope that I can continue to share work with fellow colleagues and contemporary fine art photography enthusiasts over the years.
