Just another day … there are times when what is ordinary in particular place and time would be anything but ordinary in any other place or time. When you are “in the moment” of a particular context, though, to see something “extra” ordinary in what, at the time and place, seems ordinary, is not always easy.
“Just Another Day” is a photograph that was made when just such an experience was underway. Walking down Royal Street in New Orleans that afternoon, there was clearly a lot going on. Given the context (i.e., the time and place), however, there was nothing about what I was experiencing that seemed anything other than ordinary. Tomorrow, or the next day, or the day after that, you might, if you remain in the place, experience a very similar scene. Tomorrow, or the next day, or the day after that, however, you will not be there, so you will not experience anything remotely similar to what you are presently experiencing. For you, the experience is now!
Learn to recognize these experiences as special, and make the photograph! Tomorrow, or the next day, or the day after that, another photographer may have a similar experience. The experience may be similar to your experience but it will be different in many ways. Experience, by definition, is personal. Differences in the technical skills, creative preferences, spiritual and cultural experiences, etc. … of the other photographer versus yours, will be quite different. Make the photograph! It will be yours.
Will your photograph be special? Perhaps it will be special to you. Perhaps it will be special to others. Perhaps it will be just plain SPECIAL! Make the photograph and see what happens.
Perhaps it will become special over time because it has become part of a larger project of yours that is special. None of this will happen, however, unless you make the photograph. Just do it!
Please tell me about your experience of a time and place … when you did not make the photograph. but wish your would have, … or, when you did make the photograph, and were glad that you did!!!
I’d love to hear from you. I will likely learn something from your report of your experience.
